10  THE PAVILION

The 'Golden Pavilion' here is built in conjunction with a decking which extends out over the pond, and from which visitors can view the fish. The tinkle of wind chimes and the splash of water from the nearby waterfall completes the feeling of calm. The third shogun Yoshimitsu erected Kinkaku-ji (with its well known Golden Pavilion) as his retirement villa in 1397. This would be the 'Temple' of the Japanese Garden.
