3  YUKIMI-GATA  (Snow Lantern and Bridge)


A distinctive lantern, named for the beauty of the snow on top during the wintertime.  It is placed out on the water's edge to benefit from its reflection in the pond.

The use of ornamental bridges came into prominence in the 14th century during the Kamakura period.  The bridge here is painted in traditional red and black
